studioDPK showcases the work of Duncan Paul Knight, a New Zealand artist resident in Lyme Regis, Dorset.
After working in advertising for decades, I am now in the lucky position of being able to practice my art full time.
My work doesn't have a specific narrative though it is by definition an expression of the human condition. I like simplicity and structure. Fluidity within constraint. Hard and soft. Clean and blurred. Positive and negative. Accidental layering. Colour. Wit.
The work on the Oil page includes a range of pieces completed both recently and over the last few years, as I have been honing my skills. The appropriation of the old masters started as exercises, but I am now embracing the chance to repurpose and refocus an historic image, to a more modern context.
The work on the Ink page, are based on specific structural elements used in combination to produce the image and evoke a mood. Each utilises a strong form with a layering technique to create texture within the image, working with the nap of the paper and the intrinsic nature of the ink medium. The very high colour saturation of ink is a both a complete joy and a real challenge.
And in the Gallery page are additional images of sold and past work - including some earlier pieces. My aim in showing these is to provide a broader sense of my work as a whole, and to offer a small window into the evolution of my art.
